Survive and Thrive in Astronomy and Beyond

The ASA Early Career Researchers chapter is pleased to announce our next ECR Mentoring Workshop, which will be held on 30-31 May at the Yarra Valley Estate, near Melbourne, VIC. This workshop is an opportunity to learn important (non-research) skills necessary to advance your career in academia or elsewhere, grow your network, and receive advice and guidance from our panel of mentors. And all of this in a slightly more relaxed setting, away from the academic environment.

The theme of this year’s workshop is “Survive and Thrive in Astronomy“, and we will touch on topics of career planning, leadership, nonacademic careers and mental health. Feedback from previous workshops has been very positive (2012 in Shoal Bay and 2014 in Mount Tamborine), and we are looking forward to another constructive and community-building meeting this year.

This workshop is intended for late-stage PhD students, postdocs, and very junior faculty. Registration is now open, and closes on 22nd April.

Invited speakers:

  • Joss Bland-Hawthorn (University of Sydney)
  • Matthew Colless (RSAA, Australian National University)
  • Sean Farrell (Teradata)
  • Virginia Kilborn (Swinburne University of Technology)
  • Iraklis Konstantopoulos (Envizi)
  • Geraint Lewis (University of Sydney)
  • Mark McAuley (Astronomy Australia Limited)
  • Orania Tokatlidis (University of Melbourne)
  • Rachel Webster (University of Melbourne)
